Increasing Data Availability for Unreliable Mobile Computers

چکیده
Journal of Research and Practice in Information Technology, Vol. 32, No. 3/4, August/November 2000 181 We propose a new replication control scheme for mobile systems. Replicating data at multiple sites could contribute to enhance the availability regarding the distributed data. Replicating data, however, inevitably induces the burden of maintaining replica consistency which requires more complex synchronisation mechanism, especially in the presence of excessive site failures which could lead to global access breakdown. In order for mobile workers to reliably access global replicated databases without global access breakdown, we devised a new scheme called fault-tolerant quorum consensus (FTQC). The main idea behind FTQC is that quorums are allowed to be accessed fault-tolerantly by resilient voting and deferred quorum-update protocols. We enhanced responsiveness of FTQC by dynamic quorum reconfiguration mechanism which minimizes rollbacks. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that FTQC schemes outperform the traditional schemes.

Balanced Scheduling Algorithm Considering Availability in Mobile Grid
The emerging Grid is extending the scope of resources to mobile devices and sensors that are connected through unreliable networks. Nowadays the number of mobile device users is increasing dramatically and the mobile devices provide various capabilities such as location awareness that are not normally incorporated in fixed Grid resources. Nevertheless, mobile devices exhibit inferior characteri...

The number of smartphones, tablets, sensors, and connected wearable devices are rapidly increasing. Today, in many parts of the globe, the penetration of mobile computers has overtaken the number of traditional personal computers. This trend and the always-on nature of these devices have resulted in increasing concerns over the intrusive nature of these devices and the privacy risks that they i...
متن کاملDistributed Transactions in a Mobile Computing System
It is necessary to reexamine distrbuted transaction processing issues in mobile computing systems to account for characteristics of mobile computers like slow, unreliable communication, disconnected operation and location dependence. This study mainly discusses issues that arise due to low-bandwidth high-latency wireless communication of mobile systems. Mobile computers can be treated simply as...
متن کاملA Formal Petri Net Based Model for Antivirus Update Agent System
In this paper, a formal model for antivirus update agent system is presented based on mobile agent technology and predicate/transition Petri nets. The mobile agent system contains two mobile agents called DCA and UNA. It sends out agents to update antivirus on client computers in a network. Each agent takes on a specified responsibility. First, DCA roams through the network and check the last d...
متن کاملData Allocation in Mobile Computing
Users of mobile computers will soon have access to shared online databases via wireless networks. We are developing a system that dynamically allocates and deallocates copies of the data-items in these databases to mobile computers, for optimizing cost and performance. This dynamic allocation of data-items to mobile computers is guided by input from the users concerning the type of wireless net...
